About this camp

The High-Altitude Balloon (HAB) Camp at Pierce College Science Dome is a two-week, project-based experience for high school students. Participants will construct, test, launch, and analyze data from their own experiments sent to the edge of space on a high-altitude balloon. The camp includes an overnight trip to eastern Washington for the launch and retrieval of the HAB. Students will gain scientific, engineering, and coding skills through hands-on activities, working in teams to design and craft payloads for the balloon. They will learn about the engineering design process, including design, build, test, evaluate, and failure analysis. The camp provides an opportunity to explore topics such as atmospheric monitoring, data collection (temperature, altitude, pressure, video, sound), and potentially capturing atmospheric particles.
