The UW Youth & Teen Programs' Coding in Java/Python courses introduce high school students to fundamental programming concepts and best practices. In Coding in Java I, students learn core computer science concepts, control and data structures, and programming basics applicable to AP Computer Science and other languages like Python and C++. They will study statements, variables, objects, expressions, conditionals, and loops. Coding in Python I focuses on fundamental computer science concepts, control and data structures, and best practices for coding and debugging in Python, covering statements, variables, values, expressions, conditionals, booleans, while loops, randomness, libraries, debugging, lists, dictionaries, functions, and file handling. Students will complete engaging coding exercises under instructor guidance and explore concepts at their own pace, building skills in writing, debugging, analyzing, and comprehending code. The Python course culminates in a final project where students create their own text-based game.
Students participate in real-time online classes via Zoom and Canvas, engaging in coding exercises under instructor guidance and practicing concepts at their own pace.
