Students in the University of Washington's Engineering Challenges program will step into the shoes of an innovator, engaging in hands-on challenges across various engineering fields, including mechanical, chemical, and aerospace. The curriculum emphasizes applying the engineering design process to test, evaluate, and improve their creations. Participants will gain practical experience in design and problem-solving activities, developing industry-related technical vocabulary and collaborative skills. The program also offers opportunities to navigate UW campus labs and facilities, providing a taste of a college engineering environment. Students will work on projects such as designing vehicles and gadgets, including solar ovens, ping-pong ball catapults, paper rockets, fan-powered boats, and balloon-powered cars. They will also meet with scientists, engineers, and designers on campus to understand career connections in these fields.
A typical day involves hands-on engineering design and problem-solving activities, applying the engineering design process, and potentially meeting with scientists, engineers, and designers on campus.
This course is ideal for incoming sixth to eighth graders who are curious about engineering and enjoy hands-on design and problem-solving.
