About this camp

The Summer Institute for Mathematics at UW (SIMUW) is a rigorous six-week residential program designed for talented high school students. The program aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of advanced mathematical concepts and rigorous proof. Students engage in intensive two-week courses taught by university professors, covering topics that vary annually but have included methods of argument, combinatorics, hyperbolic geometry, game theory, group theory, and coding theory. In addition to coursework, the program features guest lectures from mathematicians and scientists, offering insights into diverse mathematical areas and hands-on activities. Outside of class, students collaborate on challenging problems individually or in groups, engage in mathematical discussions with Teaching Assistant Counselors (TACs), and participate in social events, sports, and weekly Saturday outings. The program emphasizes tackling hard mathematical problems in collaboration with staff, fostering a profound appreciation for the depth and beauty of mathematics.

What a typical day looks like

A typical weekday begins with breakfast, followed by a morning class from 9:15 AM to 11:45 AM. After lunch, an afternoon class runs from 1:15 PM to 3:45 PM. Late afternoon and evening activities include a 'math hour' for reviewing daily mathematics and discussing homework, and dinner.

Best suited for

The ideal student is a motivated high school student from Washington, British Columbia, Oregon, Idaho, or Alaska, with at least three years of high school mathematics, who is enthusiastic about an intensive mathematical experience.
